about the labyrinth

In May of 2009, Rick Cross constructed our 11-circuit medieval Chartres-style labyrinth. This beautiful 60-foot diameter labyrinth is open to the public, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am- 7pm, April through November.

If you would like to reserve the labyrinth for a private group, or If you would like to arrange a facilitated walk, please contact Karen at 231-386-5406 or email Karen Cross, certified as a Labyrinth Facilitator by Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress.

There is no charge for use of our labyrinth; we ask instead that you please make a donation to the Food Bank sponsored by: Leelanau Christian Neighbors P.O. Box 32, Suttons Bay, MI 49682 866-643-4426 or 231-271-0091

After you park, there is a blue arrow pointing your way to the labyrinth. As you approach the labyrinth on the way to the entrance, there is an information box on your right where you’ll find a information to help guide your walk. Benches and several chairs will be located near the entrance of the labyrinth for you to sit and reflect.

Walking through our lives, we all seek a path that is truly our own. The labyrinth is an archetypal symbol that reflects this path. An archetype is a universally understood symbol. Perhaps you remember the 1960’s TV show Ben Casey that opened with the symbols drawn on the chalkboard: Man, Woman, Birth, Death, Infinity. The circle, the spiral…these symbols are archetypal.

While the origin of the labyrinth is unknown, labyrinths have been found all over the world dating from earliest antiquity. Once popular in the Middle Ages, labyrinths are being rediscovered today. It has become increasingly common to find labyrinths in schools, prisons, parks, hospitals, spas, churches, and retreat centers.

The labyrinth is a walking meditation found in all religious traditions. The labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey from the outside world to the deepest center of your being and back out into the world again with a broadened understanding of self.

The autumnal equinox marks the time when the amount of daylight and darkness are the same. During this labyrinth walk, we will focus on balance within ourselves. It is important to appreciate the fruits of our labor as we prepare for winter months ahead.
There is no fee for this labyrinth gathering. We ask instead that you please make a donation to the Food Pantry: Leelanau Christian Neighbors PO Box 32, Suttons Bay, MI 49682. To reserve your place, please email or call: karen@cross-farms.com; 231-386-5406

testimonials

"Thanks, Karen, for a most interesting program on labyrinths and the weather really cooperated to give us a pleasant experience. We have a great group of gals who enjoy new experiences and I'm sure this one will top our list of great ones. For many of us, tending and using herbs also has a therapeutic effect. We seem to be on the 'same page' in regards to controlling our well-being.

"Each month one of our members gives a monograph on an herb, its medicinal and culinary values as well as its growing habits. Since our mission is to educate, we have chosen the Northport Children's garden as our community project. Those members near Omena also tend to the charming garden across from the harbor. We hope to make our community a better place in small niche ways. The email from you is now in the in-boxes of our members.

"Thank you again for the opportunity to learn."
