Specialty saskatoon berries available at Cross Farms

Specialty Berries

We grow strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and our specialty Saskatoon berries, pictured above.

Saskatoon Berries (Amelanchier alnifolia) are new to Michigan Agriculture. They come from the Canadian Plains where they have been gathered for centuries and more recently cultivated. These deep purple berries are loaded with antioxidants and considered a superfruit. They are very popular when fresh and used extensively by bakers and preserve makers when frozen. Bakers like them because of their great taste and because they don’t “bleed” like a blueberry when baked.

Read what the Traverse City Record-Eagle has to say about these berries.

Our 2011 crop was the largest produced in Michigan. We anticipate 2012 crop will be more than double our 2011 crop. There will be fresh berries for sale at the farm around the middle of July. The majority of our crop will be presold. If you wish to reserve berries please contact us at the farm or call Sarah Peschel at (231) 383-2971.
